Four Pillars Farm is pleased to announce that we will be using Compostable clamshell packaging for our most popular greens in an effort to reduce the plastic that goes into the waste stream.
These clamshells are made of PLA, a compostable plant plastic that is fully biodegradable. This material is safe, non-toxic and can handle temperatures up to 110 degrees. It does not leach harmful chemicals into foods like regular petroleum based plastic does.
These containers compost best in a municipal composting system, where temperatures will be high enough to break down the material. They can also be composted in a well managed home compost pile, but will take much longer to break down, and it is recommended that the material is cut into pieces before adding to the pile. A temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit is needed to quickly compost the Plant-based plastic.
For more information on composting at a commercial or municipal composting site, contact your trash pick up service, or your solid waste district office.
